That means it insures against all types of loss except for what’s specifically excluded. The most common exclusions include war, terrorism and coastal flood. And, our policy automatically includes earthquake protection.
Core coverages
There are certain core coverages automatically included in your policy. For example, if you own a house and it is your primary residence, the core coverages include:
- Building
- Personal property
- Additional living expenses
- Personal and premises liability
Specialty property coverages
You choose what specialty property, if any, you want to insure. That way, you only pay for what you need. The most common types of specialty property insured are:
- Bicycles and sporting equipment and watercraft
- Fine arts and collectibles
- Jewellery and watches
Optional coverages
As with specialty property, you choose what optional coverages, if any, you want to add to your policy. Some examples of commonly purchased optional coverages include:
- Detached structures, fences and landscaping
- Identity theft and financial loss
- Legal protection
Policy deductibles
A deductible is the amount you must pay before your policy will respond for an insured loss. All policies have at least one deductible. In some cases, different deductibles may apply depending on the type of loss.
You’ll usually have the option of choosing from a range of deductible amounts. Select the deductible amount that best fits your individual risk profile and budget.

Flood insurance coverage
Historically, home insurance policies in Canada did not cover loss or damage caused by flooding; instead, you would have to rely on Disaster Financial Assistance programs from individual provincial governments. If your home insurance provider still doesn’t offer flood protection, you should shop around. Some providers now offer flood protection.
At Square One, most of our home insurance policies now automatically cover loss or damage caused by inland flood. We define inland flood as the covering of dry land by freshwater or wastewater, as well as any resulting Water Backup, that has escaped or been released from the normal confines of a lake, river, stream, natural watercourse, reservoir, canal or dam; or is generated by snowmelt or rainfall.
Eligibility
Inland flood protection is automatically included in most policies. About 5% of customers are not eligible for inland flood protection because their homes are located in areas with an extreme flood risk. These customers need to rely on Disaster Financial Assistance provided by the government. During the quote process, you’ll learn if you’re eligible for inland flood protection.
Deductible
Under Square One’s policy, all losses are subject to a deductible. The deductible is the amount that you must pay before the policy will respond. For inland flood related losses, the deductible ranges from $500 to $10,000. By selecting a higher deductible, you might be able to reduce your monthly premiums.
Cost
If you’re eligible for inland flood protection, it is automatically included in your monthly premium. The additional amount paid for this protection depends on the following:
- Whether you own or rent your home.
- The type of home you live in.
- The location of your home.
- The limits and deductibles you select.
That said, protection will start at $2/month for those renting their homes or those who own a condo. For those who own a house, protection will start at $4/month.
Exclusions
Square One’s policy does not cover damage caused by:
- coastal flood, ground water or rising of the water table; or
- gradual, continuous or repeated seepage, condensation, or leakage of water or steam over a period of time.
Coastal flood is the covering of dry land by seawater, including seawater caused by high tides, sea waves, changes in sea levels or storm surge.
